How the First-Year Baby Cost Calculator works
Every family's costs differ. Location, childcare arrangements, feeding choices, insurance, purchases, gifts, hand-me-downs, and household circumstances can substantially change a budget. For that reason, this calculator does not use one national first-year cost default.
Each field represents your expected total for the baby's first 12 months. The calculator adds those amounts and divides the total by 12 to show an average monthly equivalent. Actual spending may be uneven because some purchases happen once and others recur at different times.
Estimated first-year total = diapers and wipes + feeding + childcare + healthcare/medical out-of-pocket + gear and nursery + clothing + other baby supplies + other first-year costs
Average monthly equivalent = estimated first-year total ÷ 12

Open the new baby budget checklistWhat should I include in a first-year baby budget?
Include only categories that apply to your family. Diapers and wipes can cover disposable diapering and related supplies. Feeding may include formula, pumping or feeding supplies, bottles, and other planned expenses without assuming any particular feeding method. Childcare should reflect the care you expect to pay for during the first 12 months.
You can also enter baby-related healthcare costs you expect to pay out of pocket, gear and nursery purchases, clothing, bathing or household baby supplies, and family-specific costs not covered elsewhere. Gifts, hand-me-downs, insurance, assistance, and personal choices can change which categories apply and how much you enter.
What this calculator does not estimate
The calculator does not automatically determine the national cost of having a baby, medical or hospital bills, insurance coverage, childcare market prices, tax credits, government-benefit eligibility, lost income or parental-leave income changes, housing changes, vehicle costs, future inflation, or college savings. Income changes affect household cash flow but are not automatically baby expenses, so do not add lost income to any calculator category. If you have a separate, known first-year baby expense that is not already included in another category, enter it in the appropriate category or the “Other first-year baby costs” field. Count each expense only once. This calculator does not provide tax, insurance, medical, or financial-planning advice.
Worked example
Example only — not a national average or recommended baby budget:
$900 diapers and wipes
+ $1,200 feeding
+ $6,000 childcare
+ $600 healthcare/medical out-of-pocket
+ $1,500 gear and nursery
+ $500 clothing
+ $400 other baby supplies
+ $300 other first-year costs
= $11,400 example first-year total
Average monthly equivalent: $11,400 ÷ 12 = $950.
These numbers demonstrate how the calculator works. They are not typical costs, recommended spending amounts, or national averages.
